Sustainability

Natural, sustainable
and circular

Sustainability and circularity are at the core of our business. Since the founding of Trobas, our mission has been to upcycle food-grade by-products into high-quality, natural ingredients. In doing so, we have been contributing to the circular economy for nearly 100 years. At Trobas, we make optimal use of every raw material and ensure that our production processes are as efficient and sustainable as possible.

We continue to make our process more sustainable.

Upcycling

Gelatine and collagen peptides are so-called upcycled ingredients: high-quality products derived from food-grade by-products that would otherwise go unused for human consumption. Instead of being discarded or used in low-value applications, we upcycle these valuable raw materials into premium ingredients for food and even pharmaceutical products.

A circular production process

In addition to upcycling food-grade by-products into high-quality ingredients,  also our own production residues are valorized. Alongside collagen, we extract fat from our raw materials, which is then used to produce biofuels for cars and airplanes. The remaining organic material is fermented into biogas to generate renewable energy. In this way, we make optimal use of every raw material, ensuring that virtually nothing goes to waste.

With a small environmental footprint

Beyond our products, our production processes are designed to be as sustainable and circular as possible. For example, we purify all process water in our own water treatment plant and make use of renewable energy sources such as biomass and solar power. In addition, much of the heat used in our production process is recovered and reused. Our environmental footprint is among the lowest in the industry. In recognition of our efforts, Trobas was awarded a score within the top 18% of performers by EcoVadis in 2024.
